HYPE Market Intelligence — Week of August 17–23, 2026

Revised Sep 14, 2026: every figure re-verified against primary sources (Hyperliquid API, DefiLlama).

This is the market-side read of the week: price structure, the catalyst ladder, fee arithmetic on verified inputs, and the levels that separate one regime from the next. Every input is API-verified unless attributed inline; every arithmetic line is labeled as arithmetic, not forecast. The setup: HYPE closed $82.37 after a +44.3% week — the largest weekly gain in this dataset — after erasing the May all-time high of $67.

1. The price ladder

LevelPriceStatus
Prior all-time high$67May 30, 2026 (BitNotícias); erased Wednesday–Thursday of this week
Weekly low$57.02Monday — the launch point; +6.1% was the whole prior week's work
Squeeze-day close$69.75Aug 19, +19.3% — the single largest day
Weekly close$82.37Sunday; +44.3% over five sessions from the squeeze day
Weekly high$83.46Sunday — the fresh reference level
Pre-breakout shelf$52–58Where the token spent the first 17 days of August

Read as structure: a two-week base between $52 and $58, then a gap-free vertical week on dated catalysts. The market is now in price discovery — above every prior high, with $80 and $83.46 as the new references and no historical resistance overhead. That cuts both ways: nothing above to stop it, and nothing above to lean on.

2. The catalyst ladder

DateEvent (source)The number
Aug 19Treasury doubles long-bond buyback ops (ETHNews, Coinspress)$2B → ≥$4B per operation; 30Y yield ~5.34% → ~10bp lower
Aug 19Market-wide short squeeze (CoinGlass via CMC)~$2.74B shorts liquidated in 24h; BTC +12.9% intraday, ETH +21%
Aug 19CFTC on-shore comments (AInvest)HYPE ~$62 → ~$70 in session; candle close $69.75, +19.3%
Aug 19–21ETF bid returns (SoSoValue)BTC ETFs: $517.19M / $189.30M / $297.56M; ETH ETFs ~$189.15M
Aug 19HYPE wrappers (AInvest)21Shares / Bitwise / Grayscale ETPs ~+20%; Nasdaq tracker +30.4%
Aug 23–24Prior record broken (BitNotícias)$83.27–83.46 prints vs the $67 May 30 mark

The point of the ladder: this was not an unexplained move. Every rung is dated, sourced, and independently checkable — which is exactly what makes the durability question next week's measurable event rather than this week's argument.

3. Fee-spike arithmetic on verified inputs

Input (source)ValueArithmetic
Weekly fees (DefiLlama)$24.6M3.1x the $8.0M prior week
Peak day (DefiLlama)$6.20MAug 21; baseline $1.4–1.6M weekdays
Annualized run-rate~$1.28B/yr$24.6M × 52 — spike pace, not baseline
Baseline run-rate~$0.45B/yr$8.6M avg prior 2 weeks × 52
Buyback capacity (7d, est.)~$24.4M~99% of revenue to AF (third-party estimate) × fees
TVL change (DefiLlama)+10.2%$5.59B → $6.16B, rising daily from Aug 19

Two honest readings. The bull reading: a venue that can triple its throughput in a week and take deposits up 10% at the same time is showing real capacity and real demand. The bear reading: a $1.28B annualized fee pace built on a two-day squeeze is arithmetic on a spike — the baseline number ($0.45B/yr) is the one that describes the machine, the spike describes the moment. Both are true; next week's prints decide which one this week was.

Note on market cap: a historical circulating-supply series is not publicly available, so a price-to-revenue multiple for this specific week cannot be honestly computed. At the current snapshot (re-verified Sep 14) the ratio is ~26x on trailing inputs — see the Sep 7–13 Market Intelligence for that table.

4. Relative strength, same-source

AssetWeek of Aug 17–23From the Aug 3–16 base
HYPE+44.3%$53.83 → $82.37 (+53.0% over three weeks)
ETH+31.3%$1,910 → $2,464 (+29.0%)
BTC+23.7%$64,868 → $77,804 (+19.9%)

The same API, the same weekly windows, Sunday close to Sunday close. HYPE outperformed BTC by ~21 points and ETH by ~13 points in the breakout week — but the three-week view is the fairer one: the excess over ETH is ~24 points, over BTC ~33 points. The market-wide squeeze did most of the lifting; the Hyperliquid-specific catalyst did the rest.

5. What would change the regime

  • The Aug 29 unlock: 14.18M HYPE (~$1.2B), the largest scheduled release since launch. Absorption at record prices is the cleanest demand test on the calendar.
  • The fee tail: prints above ~$3M/day into next week would mark a baseline shift; a fast return to $1.5M marks this as a squeeze, full stop.
  • The $83.46 level: a hold on retest extends price discovery toward $90; a fast rejection frames $83.46 as the spike top.
  • TVL persistence: if deposits hold above $6.1B after volatility fades, capital stayed; if they drain with it, the rally was rented.

No price targets here — the levels above are descriptions of the map, not predictions of the route.

6. The week, day by day

The price ladder above is built from weekly extremes; the daily tape shows how those extremes were made, and which ones carried paid activity behind them.

DayCloseDay ΔIntraday rangeProtocol fees
Mon Aug 17$59.42+4.1%$57.02–$59.87$1.61M
Tue Aug 18$58.48−1.6%$58.23–$60.48$1.43M
Wed Aug 19$69.75+19.3%$58.00–$73.37$5.10M
Thu Aug 20$73.77+5.8%$68.39–$75.00$4.25M
Fri Aug 21$75.56+2.4%$71.15–$77.89$6.20M
Sat Aug 22$79.41+5.1%$72.52–$82.53$2.94M
Sun Aug 23$82.37+3.7%$77.01–$83.46$3.10M

For the regime read: the $57.02 weekly low was Monday's print, before the catalysts — the breakout never retested it. The largest single-day range belongs to the catalyst day ($58.00–$73.37, a 26% intraday span), and the fee peak came Friday at $6.20M, two days after the price ignition — activity compounding, not spiking once. Weekly fees of $24.6M are the exact sum of the seven daily prints, and the daily path $57.10 → $82.37 is the same +44.3% the weekly clock shows. Nothing in the daily record contradicts the ladder; it explains it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this report avoid a valuation multiple for the week?

A price-to-revenue multiple needs both sides measured at the same time: a market cap and a fee run-rate. Fees are public history (DefiLlama); historical circulating supply is not. Printing a multiple with a mismatched numerator would be exactly the kind of plausible-looking number this site refuses to fabricate. The current-snapshot multiple (~26x, re-verified Sep 14) lives in the Sep 7–13 report.

Was the +44.3% week mostly market beta?

About two-thirds, on same-source candles: BTC +23.7%, ETH +31.3%. The excess — ~13 points over ETH — tracks the Hyperliquid-specific Aug 19 comments and the +20–30% session moves in HYPE's listed ETP wrappers.

How much buyback does a $24.6M fee week fund?

On third-party estimates that roughly 99% of protocol revenue routes to the Assistance Fund: ~$24.4M of weekly buyback capacity. That is capacity, not executed purchases — the AF's on-chain ledger has no clean weekly API.

What was the single most important number of the week?

Arguably the $6.20M fee day on Aug 21 — it is the clearest single print that forced repositioning, not drift, drove the week. And its decay path is the single most important number of the next week.

Is this financial advice?

No. This is data analysis for informational purposes. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold HYPE or any other asset.
